On our way to Salt Lake City, we stopped in Provo to visit Brigham Young University. What a great setting for a campus with the mountains in the distance. A nice young student who reminded us of our nephew, George, took us on a golf cart for a 45-minute private tour of the campus.
He told us he had just returned from a year-long mission in Estonia, and this is a part-time job for him. Along the way, we noticed other students working in the gardens, manning the bookstore, etc. This school provides part-time employment for all who want it.
Here's a statue of Brigham Young sculpted by his grandson from sketches and recollections of others. He was a very young child when his grandfather died and never got to know him..
The next statue is of an Indian who welcomed the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock. The sculptor was from Utah, so he duplicated his work for display here.
The Y on the mountain across the way is said to be 3x larger than the letters in the Hollywood sign in California.
We visited the bookstore at the suggestion of our guide who said we would not believe it. He was correct. It had two levels and was huge. It not only carried books and the requisite tee shirts, etc., but included a grocery/drugstore and the largest candy counter on any campus in the country..
Following is a view of the Wachaeu Mountains and a shot from the road.
