This is the strangest place we have ever seen. A few thousand years ago, an underground volcano broke through the surface and spewed lava which flowed and created a whole valley of black lava cones and craters. Most of the area was rough and rocky; but some of the terrain was very smooth like the Inferno Cone which was formed when molten rock shot in the air, cooled and hardened into cinders that fell as symmetrical cones.
We climbed up this particular cone which is 1/2 a mile high. Amazingly, when I got to the top, I found a tree growing there. Go figure.
Another feature is the various caves that were formed as the lava hardened unevenly leaving voids. I walked 1/2 mile to one of them named, Boy Scout Cave, and took a picture. Looking down into the hole, I was about to climb down over the balsaltic rocks and enter this dark void when I realized I was never a Boy Scout and it just wouldn't be right.
Another void I looked down was filled with snow.
