Old Faithful Geyser

Driving north from Jackson Hole it didn't take long to reach the south entrance of Yellowstone National Park.  Then we had quite a drive within the park which offered some good views including an overview of the Snake River.  We can't seem to get away from it.  So what?  It's beautiful.

Continuing on we saw the entrance for Old Faithful and decided to see how faithful it really is.  Since we were checking into the hotel tonight, it might have thought we would go into the park tomorrow and could take the day off; but no at 3:04 pm it awakened and shot into the sky a full 5 minutes ahead of schedule.  It must have seen us coming across the parking lot.  Actually, it goes off every 90 minutes and not just for the Comerfords.  We learned that it used to erupt every 60 minutes, but like all of us Old Faithful is getting older!

We also saw a buffalo next to the Old Faithful Hotel and Joan was astonished that they can just walk around where people are.  As it turned out, that was NOTHING!  We continued on the 2-lane road and we saw a flashing sign with a picture of a buffalo.  So we slowed down.  No more than a mile or so ahead, we saw cars stopped right in the road and sure enough, there was an entire herd of buffalo and since there are no fences, several were just walking in the road ahead of us by 4 cars.  After they left the road and went into a field, we could inch up and get a good look at them.

I pulled the car over to the shoulder and got out to get a better view and some nice photos.  Joan stayed in the car (anyone surprised?)

Not bad for our first impression of Yellowstone -- stay tuned!
