Centuries ago, the northwestern quarter of Utah was covered by Lake Bonneville, a lake ten times the size of the Great Salt Lake. Due to a change in climate, it shrunk to what is now the Great Salt Lake, leaving behind the Bonneville Salt Flats where many land speed records had been set.
While my little Ford Escape is no racecar and I 80 is not really the salt flats, it was close enough to put that little puppy up to the test and see how close I could get to the 120 limit on the speedometer. There was absolutely no traffic and I was getting close to the 120 limit when my lovely wife, Joan, pointed out that my hour was up and it was her turn to drive. Oh well, now we will never know if I could have made it.
We arrived in Ely, Nevada where we will be spending the night......just in time to witness an Earthquake Disaster Drill taking place at the local Middle School. What an unexpected treat.
After walking around town and losing $1 each at nickel slot machines, we then went to the Nevada Northern Railway Museum., unusual only because they maintain locomotives and we saw the men actually doing repairs.
We are now going out to dinner at the Cell Block Restaurent in the Jailhouse Casino where the booths have a jail cell motif. If you don't hear from us, would someone please post bail?
