Get INTO Dodge

In the old westerns, Wyatt Earp would always say, :Get out of Dodge."  But we are doing the reverse.

With the threat of a tornado looming, we left Wichita and kept an ear to the radio.  Most of the ride today was barren land, it was amazing:

We passed through the town of Greensburg and saw a sign for the "Big Well," the largest hand dug well in the world - 32 feet in diameter and 109 feet deep.....so, of course, we had to stop.  Unfortunately, the grounds around it were under construction due to storm damage and they hope to have a Grand re-opening later in the summer.  Actually, Greensburg was hit with a tornado in 2007 and the town was leveled.  The decision was made by the town of 1500 to rebuild, which they are still doing.

There was also the story of a pallasite meteorite that was found on a farm in 1949 and it is one of the largest ever discovered, reportedly over 1000 pounds.  This is on display in Town Hall.

We arrived in Dodge City, KS and pulled up to the hotel under the portico where 3 other cars were parked to avoid the wind and rain coming at us sideways.

We were pleasantly surprised to have been upgraded to a suite -- SWEET!

The tornado threat was lifted so we drove into town and visited Boot Hill Cemetary, Long Branch Saloon and other stores along Front Street.  Inside the memorabilia was plentiful about this "wickedest little city in America" in the late 1800's and old shows like Gunsmoke.  We enjoyed visiting this Cowboy Capital of the World.

There was a cool locomotive, so naturally I had to get my photo taken:

We are off to the Boot Hill Casino & Resort for Dinner and to try our luck!
