The Mighty Mississippi

In the afternoon, we intended to see the Mud Island River Park on the banks of the Mississippi.  We had read about the scale model of the river that you could walk for 1/2 mile and see all the sights as you go from Cairo, Illinois to New Orleans, Louisiana.  Sounds great, right?  Unfortunately, after we drove to the river, the parking attendant told us it would not open until next weekend.  Bummer!

We drove a few blocks around downtown Memphis and Joan found a riverboat just loading for departure.  How fortuitous!  We enjoyed a nice cruise up and down the river, learned a little history and saw a tugboat pushing 18 barges, each one 60 feet long.  This was our first time on the Mighty Mississippi.
